The Golden Window
We had to take our car to Ludlow today for its annual MOT. A good excuse to visit St Laurence's church (again), as well as the library and the Oxfam bookshop. On this trip I concentrated on the wonderful medieval windows in St John's chapel. My blip is the lower panel of the so-called 'Golden Window', arguably one of the finest medieval stained glass windows in the country. It dates from the early 1450s, its spectacular colour derives from the use of silver nitrate in the glass. Its hard to imagine the impression it must have made on pilgrims in 15th century England. The window depicts three locally important saints: St. Catherine, St. John the Baptist and St. Christopher. The little figures at the bottom of the window are the donors. In this afternoon's sunshine it was glowing wonderfully. Oh, and the car passed its MOT.
