Tiny Tuesday
The given theme of 'Vegetable' was not taken literally, as being something edible, but in difference from 'animal' or 'mineral', like 'plant' (or 'moss', 'lichen', 'fungus' and so on).
We took a trip down to Dawyck, where there is an ample sufficiency of such, but, aside from moss and lichen, mostly on the large scale. But I found some flowers - main photo are the racemes of Stachyurus chinensis (unsurprisingly a native of China), from a distance resembling hazel catkins but so much prettier when seen close-to. I have admired these in the past, for their delicate yellow colour and pretty mop-caps cascading down the inflorescence. This specimen is growing close to the Scrape Burn*, seen from the path south from the pond. Thanks to jensphotos for hosting Tiny Tuesday.
As an extra I have a set of books on display in the exhibition room. If you read the titles carefully you will see that they are all names of wood with the binomial name. The 'book' is not a book but a piece of the timber from that species. Handling each one it is easy to notice the differences in colour, grain and texture. These were produced by Francis Rush. Had I the space I would be happy to have these on my own bookshelf.
I should mention the cafe, where the lemon drizzle cake is excellent but the scones require salt in the recipe.
