Quote Of The Day
"Taste every fruit of every tree in the garden at least once. It is an insult to creation not to experience it fully. Temperance is wickedness."
(Stephen Fry)
O.K., I like Stephen Fry ..... as a comedy actor and writer. However, when he pontificates on matters of politics and religion he too often proves that no matter how highly intelligent a person might be, they can still be a total schmuck. Take today's Quote Of The Day, for example. Somehow, the outspoken atheist hypocritically asserts that "creation" (oddly Biblical language for Fry) has the capability of being offended by individual human behaviour. Fry also manages to sound like every sleazy cult or criminal gang leader who ever tried to tempt a person into their group by persuading them to do something they know they should not do by telling them that it would be wrong not to do it, that they only need to do it once and if they don't like it then they can just walk away blah blah blah. "Temperance is wickedness." What an asinine statement that is! No! Temperance is using the intelligence, and free will, that you have been gifted with in order to choose not to do that which goes against your better judgement. Get thee behind me, Mr. Fry!
Anyway, enough about Stephen Fry. Let's focus on the incredible film that V and I went to see at the cinema this morning; Wicked. Just superb. Outstanding songs, incredible performances by the entire cast, fabulous costumes, amazing sets, brilliant choreography. It's five stars out of five from me.
More than that, though, was the spooky socio-poilitical resonance of the film. The crackdown on talking animals and the Wizard of Oz's policy of creating an "other" in order to create social cohesion was clearly drawing a parallel with Trump's crackdown all things D.E.I.J. Of course, Trump was not in power when this film went into production, but obviously it was no secret what crackdowns on D.E.I.J. would follow a Trump election victory. Just yesterday, AlsacienneAI showed another example of that.
One of the people that helped myself and many others get through the previous Trump administration was Randy Rainbow. Now, with the return of Donald Trump, Randy Rainbow is back again. No, that doesn't mean I am glad Trump is back in power, I'm just pleased to be able to enjoy Randy Rainbow's wonderful comic musical numbers again. And now that I have enjoyed Wicked, I can appreciate these twists on the songs Defying Gravity and Popular even more.
