Faster than me
There were sailing boats out on the Clyde today, taking advantage of the wonderful sunshine.
However not only this yacht was making more progress towards their destination than I did - the two paddle borders I watched from the Gourock pier was doing so too.
I had an appointment in Glasgow at lunchtime so I set off from home about 10.00 to catch the 10.45 ferry from Dunoon, which connects with a train at 11.25 and would get me to where I was going ( a slight walk from Central Station ) in plenty of time.
The 10.45 was however cancelled because of "crew availability" but Cal Mac had laid on a bus to take passengers to the Wester Ferries terminal. There was a bus on the other side too, so although I got to Gourock station too late for my preferred connection, I knew there was another one in half an hour.
Except there wasn't. There were no trains running from Gourock at all because of "over running engineering works" and the replacement bus , plus a walk , would mean that I would be an hour late. Moreover the trains were to be off all day, meaning another three hour journey back to Dunoon.
So at Gourock I accepted the inevitable and walked to the Cal Ma pier to start the journey home . But of course there I had to wait for another 45 minutes because there is presently a one boat service , owing to the annual refit.
I used to sympathise with my constituents about the delays they experienced commuting across the water. I did try to get them improved and I thought that had happened.
To be fair I do use this service quite often now and it is more reliable.
Today however was a taste of the bad old days, made worse by poor information - for example nothing at the Dunoon ferry terminal warning about the lack of trains at Gourock.
