I ran out along the coast and suddenly looked at the blue sea and sunny beach and thought: I could be on holiday in the Mediterranean, isn't study leave wonderful, I could do this for a whole lot longer. Everything is possible.

Two seconds later a rain squall swiped across the sun, obliterated Bass Rock, Berwick Law, and the Isle of May, clattered across the caravans, and then I too was soaked.

I ran on, enveloped by the smell of newly-wet summer soil, passing rain-battered butterflies, grass bowed by the weight of the weather, but by the time I turned to retreat, the sun was back again.
