A seldom seen Ladybird (Ladybug)
This is the kidney-spot ladybird, Chilocorus renipustulatus.
It is a small (4mm) species of ladybird found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa.
Being so small and predominantly black, it probablly goes unnoticed most of the time. I don't recall ever seeing one before. Very few of you blippers do either as a search of all blips shows just two from the UK, and one from Finand. A related species, Chilocorus stigma, found in North America has been blipped from there just four times.
I found it on the bark of a tree in deciduous woodland. The trees were mosty birch with a few willow, beech and oak. I didn't note which it was on at the time.
I have just checked the nature logging website iRecord and it shows 16 records for this species in Fife in the last 3 years.
