Parish Pollinator Pledge

My sister gave me this rather unusual bejewelled beetle brooch for my birthday last month.(It's about 2 1/2  inches long!). Today I had the perfect occasion to wear it, as I attended a "Pollinator  Workshop" run by members of the Nature Recovery Team who work within our County's Countryside Services department. They are encouraging community groups to make a Parish Pollinator Pledge to increase  the variety and number of pollinators in their area. Today's meeting  discussed  how to  put it into action. Interesting facts:
In the UK all pollinators are insects (in other countries sometimes bats or birds are pollinators )
Beetles make up the largest set of pollinators because of their sheer numbers. (4000 species,  although not all are pollinators)
Flies especially hover flies are very important, too.
Bees and moths are also important, and more so than wasps or butterflies.
Making bug hotels, providing a year- round  nectar supply from a variety of flowering plants, providing a water supply,  and having areas of long grass as well as short grass will all encourage a good range of pollinators.

It was good to meet with other like minded people from nearby parishes  and conservation groups.
