BEETLE with a BACKPACK

This unusual bug appears to be of the beetle variety but I’m unable to accurately identify it. At about three or four times the size of a ladybug, it has very striking markings. I think it looks like it has a backpack strapped on its back. If it has wings, they’re not apparent, and I didn’t see it fly. Online I’ve tried beetle identification for Michigan and bugs in North America, but with the hundreds of beetles pictured, nothing even vaguely resembles it. Any suggestions?
