Day 4

It’s been another wonderful day. We bought tickets on-line for Kunsthistorisches, an enormous art gallery in what had been yet another Hapsburg palace. €18 for seniors. We were there several hours and limited ourselves to some of the main attractions - a few Durer, Vermeer, Brueghal ‘s Tower of Babel, Caravaggio’s Madonna of the Rosary, Holbein’s Jane Seymour, Rembrandt’s self-portraits, and some Titian, Raphael and Velazquez. After a Quick Look at the huge gold salt cellar, we paid another €4 to see a special exhibition of the famous Brueghal of the hunters in winter and a few Arcimboldo’s. His painting were unusual as they were of human heads created with animals, fish and flower shapes.

I had booked the Sky bar at STEFFL for 2.15 so we dashed the 20 minutes to get there in time. We had a great view of St Stefans Cathedral tiled roof from there. We treated ourselves to a small glass of champagne to celebrate our last day here. We shared 3 small plates which were delicious - vegan gyoza with with sesame dip and cucumber and radish spirals, grilled goat’s cheese with walnuts, fig cream, honey and rocket and some sweet potato wedges.

We had bought a day ticket for transport and had thought of a visit to Freud’s house but decided instead to go to the nearby House of Illusion for a bit of light relief after all the art.

To make use of the tram ticket we rode right round the ringstrasse, getting off so that we could see the Danube which actually did look blue as it was sunny and warm.

Only 5.5 miles and 12,800 steps today!

It’s been a fantastic trip.
