Hell on earth

A few days ago I wrote about issues upon entering the US for various people.

As bad as that is, nothing compares to what is happening to the population of immigrants who are in country — many of them illegally but not all of them by any means. They get rounded up with no warning by people who do not identify themselves nor provide any paperwork explaining the arrests; they have no possibility of reaching out to lawyers or family and many times they just simply disappear within the system (there’s supposed to be a database tracking where they are sent but that doesn’t seem to work).

From those who have managed to either get out or at least contact someone, we know that the jail conditions are abysmal: they are packed like sardines in small spaces, with little food, no water, no facilities (“piss on the floor” is what they are told…), sometimes chained and shackled so hard they can’t breathe… there are at least three known cases of inmates having died in the past 10 days.

Most of the detention facilities are managed privately: that means the more people in there, the more money the facilities stand to make and who gives a f..k about human dignity and human rights.

This privatization of government services is actually the model the administration wants to move to as it shutters more and more government agencies. If what is happening to the prison system is any indication, we are in for a rough(er) ride….
