Faros.
Up for our usual breakfast on the balcony after a very long lie today. I think M’s head was a little sore, so we decided to have a wander to town and catch a bus to the beach just past the lighthouse in Kato Paphos. We rented a couple of sun loungers and a parasol and had a lovely morning lazing in the sun and reading. When we got hungry, we moved just 10 metres from our spot and ordered a burger from the bar with a pint of Keo. Delish.
We’d both attempted a swim that morning, but despite the sandy beach, underneath the water, the reefs were sharp and scattered randomly so it was hard to avoid them. We’d entered from a ladder and had to pluck up the courage to jump into a patch of dense seaweed, suspended in the water and just waiting to wrap around your ankles and wrists. The seaweed is plentiful here and almost all loose in the water rather than in beds. It takes some getting used to, but once you see it won’t hurt you and you can easily rid yourself of it, you can ignore it. However; if you let it dry to your skin, it sticks like glue and you have to rip it off like a wax strip!
The water was a few degrees warmer than our usual beach, just a mile or two down the coast, so despite the seaweed and reefs I stayed in a while and bobbed about in the waves. I’ve never swum in such a warm sea before – it was like bathwater!
After a snooze on the loungers we decided to walk home via the shops, but M wasn’t feeling well and we ended up getting a taxi home. A seat on the balcony and a beer fixed him! After our huge burgers we felt like nothing other than fruit salad for tea, so I chopped grapes, cherries, orange, banana, apple, pear and mango, which we demolished while the sun dipped below the buildings. We played twist and rummy by candlelight before heading in for bed. Another lovely day in the sun!
