A minor inconvenience
A couple of days before Anniemay’s operation I stumbled into an alternative universe. I’d been vaguely aware of its existence in TV ads which popped up while AM was watching some afternoon TV quiz shows, but had assumed we were not the intended audience for such things. Needless to say, dear reader, I was wrong.
Friends and relations who’d had knee/hip - or both - surgery, began to nudge us towards the world of mobility aids.
Someone said to me a long time ago, when talking about the benefits of preventative medicine - “I’d rather have a crutch than fall over….”
Little did we know that Anniemay would end up taking this advice quite literally.
Not just crutches, but special chairs for using in the shower, devices for getting on and off the toilet, a means of shortening the cranks on an exercise bike…. and that’s just the engineering hardware.
Then there are ice packs/warm packs, special socks/leggings ….. The internet is awash with this stuff. We had no idea.
And now, 6 weeks on, the house - which at one point looked like a mobility aids showroom - is returning to normal. The crank shorteners on her bike will stay for some time. They’re hardly noticeable. But the crutches have gone, along with the shower chair. The contraption above will stay a bit longer, but its days are numbered.
Until she has the other knee done.
