My topsy-turvy life

Away day blues

Birmingham 4 Shrews 1
League 1

What a weird day!
Aaron and me had planned to do an away day this season for a while and thought Birmingham would be a good bet being relatively close and relatively big. It didn't go quite the way we expected.
— We were delayed getting to the park and ride (Mom & Dad's house) by over an hour thanks to various accidents, closures and roadworks on the way.
— We finally got into Birmingham and up to St Andrews to be told that the away end was the other end of the stand and to get there we had to walk pretty much around an entire residential estate.
— A big queue to get in under the beady eye of the steward here.
— Aaron was then stopped by security who didn't seem to believe he was 16 and ordered him to empty his pockets. He is 16, so his pockets were full of rubbish.
— We went to get our seats to be told, "oh, we all just sit anywhere, nobody minds".
— I ended up next to a woman who told me she was "absolutely mental" before berating people about standing up, then disappearing before half time, not coming back until 75 minutes, then leaving early.
— There was a man pretending to play a guitar.
— I was behind 3 people stood up with the strangest choices of haircuts I've seen for a while (bowl cut, mullet, and straggly).
— A fight outside the ground that had a policeman saying "what do you expect me to do about it!"
— Some Birmingham fans on the walk back talking about how they were going to "hammer Villa" next season, seemingly forgetting they are currently, literally leagues apart.

The game itself was one way traffic all the way through to be honest, particularly after the first goal, and Birmingham should have scored more than the four they did. The first 2 goals especially were poor goals to concede with balls whipped into the box and the defenders nowhere to be seen. It was good to see Shrews still trying though, even at 4-0 down, eventually getting a consolation goal with only their 2nd attempt on target.
Considering where Shrews find themselves at the foot of the league, it was a very respectable away crowd* (not my picture). If you know where to look you can even see me and Aaron.

...and Shrews even scored just before the end.
"How shit must you be, we scored a goal"
