Ericaceae

This lovely rhododendron is located at the Leach Botanical Garden, in Portland.

Originally called "Sleep Hollow",  it was the home and gardens of Lilla and John Leach. Lilla was a botanist who discovered several plants previously unknown to Western science. The couple left their small estate for use as a park.

Reading about rhododendrons, I learned there are more than 1,000 species, and they are part of the heath family.
