Pipe Dream
or Buddha and The Warrior
Today’s garden refurbishment finds these two unlikely bedfellows side-by-side.
“What’s she doing. She hasn’t a clue, you know. Last year she got 5 tomatoes from 15 euros worth of plants. She over waters everything and she does that annoying humming thing”
“Oh come on, Warrior dude. She’s happy and that’s all that matters. She knows that nothing lasts forever so might as well enjoy the little pleasures”
“That’s fine for you to say. All you have is a pair of sandals and a sheet wrapped around you. I own lands beyond the Khangai Mountains and they are constantly in danger of being plundered; I have 3 teams of thoroughbred horses and a virus can destroy them all in the blink of an eye. My wife is a greedy selfish woman and my children are spoilt and ungrateful. How can you be so carefree when you have nothing to your name but a smile and a comb over. How? How? Answer me you silly little man”
“Yes you are right. But the sheet keeps me warm and covered. The sandals stop my toes getting stubbed. And my comb over reminds me of a time when I had a thick head of nut brown hair”.
Silence between the two of them. Only the gentle humming of the Under Gardener as she over waters everything and wonders how the heck the weeds look so healthy.
The Warrior pondered the scene that was peaceful and restful. But he still couldn’t get rid of the thought that the Present was a difficult place to be - he preferred regretting the Past and feeling apprehensive about the Future. The Present was No Joke.
