Spurn Point
Long walk for us today. We decided to head out from the cottage and walk all the way down Spurn Point to the lifeboat station at the end. We'd previously driven down, about 14 years ago, before the road was washed away, and so we didn't set ourselves a target of getting right to the tip, but we wanted to be able to see it. We thought it would be a long walk, but it turned into the longest we have ever done since we started recording tracks on our phones, coming in at 9.6 miles. We're glad we took lunch and plenty of water with us.
We had a good chat with some Wildlife Trust people who were going out onto the mud to do some testing for a new oyster bed on our way out, there were still out there when we walked back!
We had fun exploring the old military buildings down the end, we don't remember finding them the last time we were down this way. There were volunteers clearing out some of the old ruins of vegetation, so it might be that they were deep in the wilds on our last visit. We also found a volunteer going giddy with their loppers taking off the caterpillar nests that were near the path to try and reduce the impact on people walking by once they hatched.
We spotted the coastguard helicopter hovering over the water at one point, and watched if for a while. It seemed to be doing exercises and dropped a smoke grenade and a rescuer at one point.
On our way back we stopped for a chat with an old couple who were visiting from Harrogate. They suggested we visit Crosby Beach near Liverpool for more photographic opportunities!
We arrived back at the cottage at about 5.30pm, and after a quick cup of tea we walked up the road to the local pub for a very nice chicken burger dinner. We managed to bag a window seat so enjoyed watching the sun set over the water.
