Reflections in Time

RAGBRAI

The Register?s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa®, is an annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state. Heading into its 37th year, RAGBRAI is the longest, largest and oldest touring bicycle ride in the world.

RAGBRAI is a bicycle ride, not a race. It started in 1973 as a six-day ride across the state of Iowa by two Des Moines Register columnists who invited a few friends along. It is held the last full week in July. RAGBRAI is planned and coordinated by The Des Moines Register.

The RAGBRAI route averages 472 miles and is not necessarily flat. It begins somewhere along Iowa?s western border on the Missouri River and ends along the eastern border on the Mississippi River.

People come from all over the world and U.S. to participate.

This year the route went right in front of my friends house so we set up food, drink and chairs and partied as they all went by....with many stopping to meet us and take a break.
There were 15,000 bikes and 1,600 follow-up vehicles.
It was soooo much fun!
