Funeral in Hull

It was an early start to get down to Hull for Luke’s dad’s funeral. Of course we got there too early but better that than late.

The celebrant did a good job of making the service personal. Peter had risen to great heights in his career. Unfortunately we never got to know him as we only met him once at #3 daughter and Luke’s wedding. He had been an extrovert salesman in chemicals and since retirement had a busy life with his golf, bridge and social life, so much so he saw Ella and Nathaniel, his only grandchildren, only once or twice a year. However when “Blowin in the wind” was played at the end I saw big blobs of tears drop into Nathaniel’s lap. His mum hugged him. Ella refused to have her hand held. She said she’d have cried if she’d done that. Their first funeral. The saddest thing was that Peter’s wife wasn’t able to be there in person as she’s still having to be careful after having a stem cell transplant as a result of bone cancer but their daughter did well to read out a message from her mum.

We had a quick chat with some of the family but to get home before too late we had to leave the wake before the food appeared. I expect Mr C will want to keep going till we get home and then it’ll be a glass of wine and some cheese.

It’s been a long day but I know daughter, Luke and his sisters appreciated we’d made the effort so I’m glad we went.
