Nancy
About 9000 years ago the glaciers receded from the Susitna Valley (global warming) and left rolling rills (drumlins) and many shallow lakes.
Nancy Lake is one such lake nestled in the sand and gravel flotsam of the previous glaciation.
It is believed that native Indians settled in the Susitna Valley, one site at Indian Bay on Nancy Lake. Non-native white settlers arrived in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Because of the wet swampy land surrounding the lakes, the area around Nancy Lake was not homesteaded or cultivated, therefore evaded civilization for a while.
This cabin was one of the first on Nancy Lake. It was originally built circa 1912-1915 and was associated with a roadhouse located on the winter trail between Houston and Willow which connected Matanuska with Talkeetna. When the railroad was build in 1917, the Nancy Roadhouse was no longer needed.
Nancy Lake is now one of a string of lakes that can be navigated by canoe. There are many small cabins and residences. There are about 20 lakes that make up the Nancy Lake Recreation Area.
If you turn around, you see this.
