Jet Age Children
A good day today with Bella and Hetty. We visited the Jet Age Museum, which they loved. There are a few cockpits to sit in and two small, child size, biplanes to sit in too. This time they were tall enough to go up into the Vulcan cockpit which was fascinating for them.
They had sheets to find letters, the location of which were marked on the sheets. When they had collected all the letters they had to de-jumble them to form the name of one of the aircraft on display. Just happened to be the one that they are standing in front of in the blip picture.
It is a fabulous museum, which I volunteered at for over five years some time ago, mostly doing the Vulcan cockpit tours. They also have the front fuselage section of a Trident airliner, including about 4 rows of passenger seats. It's relevant to the history of North Gloucestershire aviation because it was the first aircraft, in the world, to have automatic landing system which was developed by Smiths Instruments in Cheltenham.
I can highly recommend a visit if you are in the area. It's free entry but they do encourage donations, it costs a lot to run the museum as well as renovating and maintaining the exhibits.
It was opened by Eric 'Winkle' Brown, probably the most famous British pilot ever, but maybe not as well known as some. A very modest man who I had the honour of shaking his hand on the day he opened the museum.
