The Unexpected Capture Of Captain Candyfloss
Today was supposed to be a gloriously sunny day so naturally that meant we were going to venture back to the coast again - with the intended destination being Margate.
However, on the journey there the skies remained resolutely overcast with just the occasional glimpse of very pale sunlight. So somewhat discouraged and not feeling like pushing on for another 17 miles to Margate we made the decision to alight at Whitstable instead.
We were actually feeling famished at this point anyway as we had left home before having any breakfast and after parking the car and taking a quick stroll through the harbour we settled on a return to The Duck of Northumberland (of course, that should read the Duke of Northumberland but I think I prefer the aquatic wildfowl version!) for a light lunch and a pint in the hope of kick starting our photographic endeavours despite the unco-operative feeling weather. In fact I ended up being grateful for the meteorological conditions as it made me try a bit harder to capture some different aspects of the town instead of my usual shots of harbourside boats and the seafront.
My main image - which is part of the window display of a shop called Lottie's Sweet Creams - may have actually stood out more as the pop of bright pink from the window frame really caught my attention in the lacking light.
My first extra was taken at the harbour but instead of focusing on the boats and fishing paraphernalia I was looking for an alternative viewpoint which I think I managed to capture when I came across this guy sitting contemplatively on a bench, inscribed with the phrase "we have no time to stand and stare", with its glorious vista of the nearby cement works!
As we continued our amble around the harbour I really felt like I was getting my photographic eye in and I loved the juxtaposition in my next shot of an ice cream van parked right next door to an outdoor sauna - with the sauna appearing to attract quite a few more customers than the ice cream van. You could argue they were blowing a bit hot and cold!
After a lovely chat with a guy at the harbour, who was happy to have his portrait taken by my brother, we took one last walk along the seafront before heading back to the car. My last image was taken down a quiet side street outside a local community centre where this fisherman finally appeared to have met his Waterloo!
So today turned out to be an unexpected destination with unexpected photographic results which I ended up being more than unexpectedly happy with!
