Murals of Mobile
Sunday
A frustrating day today. Since the forecast wasn’t great, we decided to visit the city of Mobile, about a 75:minute drive, at the head of Mobile Bay. We are driving our Tesla, and have been charging it at a charging station in Gulf Shores, but today R decided we would continue further to a Buc-ee’s near Mobile - huge mistake! For my non- American readers, who probably don’t know, Bucc-ees is a huge gas station/ EV charging/ convenience store chain, which started in Texas, and is spreading around the country. The store is enormous, selling all sorts of food, snacks and assorted other items. We had stopped at it on the way down on a weekday afternoon and it had been fine, but today it was a mad house - impossibly congested - they had several people trying to control the traffic, unsuccessfully. We must have been there the best part of two hours, trying to get in, charging, and then getting out again. We won’t be using that one again on a weekend!
By the time we finally reached Mobile the weather was deteriorating, and we had a few showers. so we only stayed a couple of hours and then headed back to our accommodation. I had read that Mobile had a number of murals, largely clustered on or around Dauphin Street, a historic street that has some similar architecture to that of the French quarter of anew Orleans or Charleston, but less well kept. So we used that as our base, and as you can see, we found quite a few of the murals. The top right mural against the black background represents Harriet Tubman, American abolitionist and social activist, along with a quote that is often attributed to her. The full quote reads,
“ Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars and change the world.”
We also passed the grand looking Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception ( see extra collage), and a couple of attractive squares, Cathedral Square and Bienville Square, with a fountain, and a bandstand. Unfortunately, the Art museum was closed, otherwise that would have been a good place to visit on a dreary day.
I’ve posted three entries tonight- if you have time, do scroll back and see the others!
