Walk
Today I worked part of the morning at home, before going into work to spend time with the only team members currently in Scotland: PhD student Y, and intern R. I arrived just before lunch when, after eating last night's leftovers, dessert was the lemon bavarois that Y had made yesterday. She'd tried to reduce the calories so, although welcome and tasty, it wasn't as good as it might have been.
In the afternoon I started programming and, when I got to a point where I needed to think, I went for an hour's walk round and then over Blackford Hill. It was very pleasant, particularly with the scent of the gorse. I came back with two ideas! The unexpected one was a toy example that didn't behave as I'd expected, but in a very different and exciting way. I left Y and R to get to the bottom of what was causing the aberrant behaviour, and it should help with their understanding of the underlying algorithm.
