Whisky Fringe
What has become an annual event thanks to a friend who somehow manages to get tickets when they come online. Wanda says they went in a matter of seconds this year and she had to trade with what she secured to get the Saturday slot.
26 stands with a variety of malts and blends to sample. Some at 50% strength. Lots of oatcakes and water on offer to help dilute!
Photo opportunities varied. From Wanda's lilac hair - it used to be EasyJet orange! - to the detailed frescos of Phoebe Traquair. The event is held at the Mansfield Traquair venue at Broughton Strret, sometimes known as Edinburgh's Sistine Chapel.
This photo however shows the event. For the first time that I recall cheese was on offer at this stand. Along with the innovation of pipettes to add just a dash of water.
A discovery was Hankey Bannister Heritage blend, a heavy with malt mix. The brand - derived from the names of the founders Mr Hankey and Mr Bannisyer - has been made since 1757 and was favoured by Churchill and King George V. Mainly sold abroad it is being pushed now for the home market. It tastes smokey with a strong overlay of sweet shop especially toffee and caramel. Very quaffable.
I slept well this evening!
