Day 4- Salem, Massachusetts
Salem, famous for it's witch trials of 1692 is only an hour north of Boston. We took the ferry out which was a beautiful journey on a hot sunny morning. I have some gorgeous photos of the Boston skyline as we were leaving, but thought this photo would be better to sum up our day.
In 1692, 20 people in Salem were accused of being witches, tried, convicted and executed - a notorious case of paranoia and mass hysteria. Eventually in 1702 the trials were declared unlawful, and those executed were officially pardoned in 1711. On the 300th anniversary, a memorial garden was opened in Salem - there is a granite bench for each victim, and a fresh rose is placed on each bench every day. Bridget Bishop was the first of the accused to be executed.
