Palm Sunday
Warm and sunny day!
1. Because today was Palm Sunday, children dressed as witches and wandered from door to door bringing decorated willow twigs as blessings to drive away evil spirits, in return for treats. This year 10 witches found their way to our door.
2. Today was election day, we had the first double election staged in nearly 30 years. We had municipal and county council elections. This time our voting place was in the Pirkkala main library.
3. We had great family time, we went to see Heikki Marila's exhibition in the Sara Hildén Art Museum and later had a meal together.
The theme of power in its various manifestations is a common thread running through Heikki Marila’s artistic practice. Marila paints trivial subjects on a monumental scale and shrinks down institutions of power into miniatures.
Flowers have remained a prominent theme in Marila’s recent practice. Marila painted his first floral compositions soon after the turn of the millennium, drawing inspiration from the rich symbolism of 17th century Dutch still life paintings. Flowers are generally regarded as a trivial, commonplace subject in art, but Marila challenges this notion by painting them on a scale as monumental as possible.
Marila's works in the photo are part of the series where he began to explore the traditions of German church art by painting his own expressive interpretations of The Isenheim Altarpiece (c. 1512-16) by Matthias Grünewald (c. 1475-1528).
One of Heikki Marila's flower paintings as an extra.
