Sun, wind, warmth and chill
The title describes the weather today. In sheltered spots warm enough to end up sitting out in a t-shirt, in windier or shady spots a down jacket was required!
So, morning cup of tea outside in the sun, less than 2 metres from the bird feeder. The smaller birds continue to feed because they are now used to us being there. Today's surprise was the great spotted woodpecker that landed with an audible thump on the trestle, then realised I was there and flew off in a panic. A bit later it returned and pecked nervously, flying off as soon as it grabbed a good bit of fat. It repeated the performance a little later. Maybe it'll get used to us?
Before I split more logs I need somewhere to stack them to dry out so today's task was constructing a suitable frame to hold 2 or 3 rows of wood.(extra).
Encouraged by my success I turned to the ancient bench that we retrieved from a skip 30 years ago. It is becoming something of work of art as the original wood has dried and rotted and it is kept going and held together by an outer frame of bits and pieces. Perhaps another day's blip?
We'd both been busy with different tasks through the day but quite late in the afternoon we decided to take a walk. We went down across the fields to where the bird hordes were gathered. As we got nearer we could see there had been a crop in the autumn (probably barley or oats) and the birds were finding a lot of food there. The swans, geese and most of the cranes have moved off north, but the fields are now full of gulls, fieldfares, and large flocks of some grey and white bird which may be northern lapwings. They don't let us close enough to really see, but when they lift in a flock and fly together they look really beautiful. As they turn the whole flock looks grey, then white, then grey again.
The walk ends up with a kilometre or so along the disused railway.
I decided spring has now arrived and started tagging my pictures appropriately!
