The Watch House

A morning walk from the Cley car park along the shingle spit towards Blakeney Point. The weather wasn't as kind as the forecast implied, and it was decidedly grey and chilly.

Slogging over shingle was hard going, and we walked just over 3km in each direction, as far as a little mobile hut (out of curiosity) just beyond the Watch House. We went over to have a closer look at the Watch House which is still available for hire. It has only basic facilities - camp beds, water for washing, and a barbecue - and the easiest way to access it is by boat. In the 1800s it was used as a lookout for sailors in distress and smugglers, and during both world wars it was again used as a lookout and the shingle bank was protected by barbed wire and land mines in case of invasion.

In the afternoon MrM drove us to Walsingham (extra), where we had a stroll around. A very pretty place, but so many shrines and religious artefacts as to seem a bit creepy. Then a quick look around Burnham Market, and on to Wells, where we were too late to find any cafés open.

We enjoyed our evening meal at the Harnser, and had a relaxing evening.
