High Spot
In geological terms, limestone is soft and soluble. Water beats rock. Since the ice melted 10,000 years ago, the land, relieved of all that weight, has risen. Rainwater, hastening towards the sea, has all that extra energy, flowing from higher up, and cuts deep into (and sometimes through and under) the unresisting stone
Here, we are on a high point, standing above one of the larger caves - hollowed out by that water - looking down on 100m of vertical erosion to the Manifold valley below. The Manifold trail follows the route of the old railway that, in turn, followed the river, taking advantage of its work
Three generations made the short walk to see the view, though some may have slept through it
