Doing one's civic duty

Good Friday it may be, but it also marked the opening of the advance polls for the federal election, and so, with voter’s card in hands, down went Mrs. Ottawacker and I to the Marriott Hotel on Walkley to cast our votes. The station opened at 9, and at 8:55, she and I were in the line, which was one person deep, to cast our votes. I can therefore provide you with wholly accurate early news from the Canadian election. At 9:03, in the Ottawa Centre riding, the Liberals were in the lead with at least 66% of all cast votes. You read it here, folks.

Having done our bit to defeat the rampant crawl (excuse the tautology) of Conservatism in North America, we went home. That was quite possibly the highlight of my day. The sun, having given so much promise to the early part of the day, disappeared up its own behind and left a grey and somewhat miserable sky behind it. I had a very nice WhatsApp call with Mark and Sarah in the Drôme – the selfish buggers are still selling their house – but it hasn’t gone through yet. The “if only”s fair rang through the kitchen later on that afternoon as I gave Mrs. Ottawacker a debrief.

Other than that, I did some photos in the online album, trying to master the updates to the programmes my migrating of software had caused, did the laundry, and cooked, to general acclaim, Wiener Schnitzel for dinner. Then, Ottawacker Jr. gave us his big news. There was a new series of Crime Scene Kitchen on CBC. You might recall the excitement the previous series of CSK caused in the Ottawacker household, indeed, it might be leading Ottawacker Jr. towards a culinary summer camp. Well, I am pleased to report that this one is even better! For a start, the people seem to be slightly more intelligent (with a few notable exceptions, of course), and there is even the addition of some notable eye candy in the form of two French self-taught bakers. Watching it is an exercise in self-restraint, as Laissa & Camille glide elegantly around the kitchen, using new concepts such as logic to divine the mystery recipe. This will never work out in the long run, as logic is one of those foreign concepts that American television despises. They are bound to lose out to the Vietnamese cat-ear-wearing twin sisters from Missouri who bake a Star-Spangled banner themed flag into a pavlova. But for the time-being, it is nice to watch, even if the camera doesn’t tend to spend long enough on their faces while they are using their logic. To my despair, I noted that the show (while being on CBC) was made by the Fox network. I’m not sure how I feel about watching it now. What would Camille do?
