Mushrooms

The plan was to go to the protest march downtown today, but John didn't really want to give up the farmers' market for it, and I didn't want to make him go, so he went to not one, but two farmers' markets  with Dana and Jim, and I stayed home and got caught up on a variety of small tasks  and finished the four year sweater, or at least declared it finished. I was going to put up a picture of it, but it doesn't look like much on a hanger so I'll hold until I try it on. The moment of truth.

Dana loved the mushrooms and said that the mushroom lady told her that oil or butter, thyme and garlic are the holy trinity for cooking them  and brought pasta made by hand by an Italian Nonna to put the resulting sauce on. Reminds me that my niece, the actor (Rick and Meg's daughter) is appearing in a series called 'Nonnas' coming out on Netflix next month.

John also brought some  flowers which I spent a pleasant hour arranging in my mother's 'Blue Willow' jug. It will no doubt appear in these pages before the week is out.

We went on our power walk but it was somewhat less than powerful as we were both feeling tired and stopped a couple of times to talk to people. One man calls Spike his 'soulmate' because he is legally blind due to macular degeneration. His dog guides him. He can't read and I asked if anybody read to him. 'Oh yes', he said. 'My wife reads to me a lot. In fact she makes it possible for me to continue to do my job'. Turns out he is a patent attorney and the material read to him by his wife is 'crushingly boring'.

The weather was supposed to be warm and nice today but instead it has turned out to be much like the weather we left Berkeley to get away from. The sun struggled out of the clouds at about noon  for a few hours but the fog has now rolled back in again, something that rarely happens here. Not bad weather for a little work in the garden though.
