The Sun Voyager, Reykjavik

‘Whatever your life's work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.’
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Grabbed a quick breakfast at Bristol Airport and by lunchtime we were in Reykjavik, admiring ‘The Sun Voyager’, the beautiful waterfront sculpture by Jón Gunnar Arnason. Although resembling a Viking long-ship, the ‘Sólfarið’ was conceived by the artist as a dream boat and an ode to the sun, representing the promise of undiscovered territory and a dream of hope, progress and freedom. Sounds very much like transport for the souls of the departed to the realm of the afterlife to me, much like the Egyptian ‘Boat of the Dead’. Its’ skeletal nature lends itself to that too, brings Coleridge’s Rime of The Ancient Mariner to mind. And that was only the beginning of my visit to the land of fire and ice.
Spent half a day doing the tourist bit around the city, a delightful place if a bit on the chilly side (the clue is in the name of course)! Loki’s Café opposite the Hallgrimskirkja was such a treat to round off the day before the Northern Lights entertained us until we welcomed K2 and R to Erik the Red’s Guesthouse in the early hours. Our trek begins tomorrow.
