I learned today that last month Canada gave Ukraine an additional US $35 million in aid to restore its energy system. This was portrayed in the news as a response to US cuts. However, Canada announced Canadian $50 million in assistance to the energy sector over the year on Feb 24, before the calamitous meeting between Zelensky and Trump. The press announcements were made mid-March so I don’t think Canada made the contribution because the US was pulling out. Just at the end of Feb, Canada and the US Dept of Energy announced $3 million to strengthen the nuclear security detection and response capabilities of Ukraine. I see it announced by Canada. I’m not finding it announced by the US.
Russia has a fighter called Su-75 Checkmate. It is supposed to be an affordable alternative to the F-35 and they were hoping India, Algeria, and the United Arab Emirates would buy it. “Russia’s reputation for overstating capabilities also undermines buyer confidence.” The above listed countries have decided not to buy. Sanctions have made it hard for them to get high-tech components so buyers don’t think they could make them anyway.
This sounds bonkers. Ukraine has some cardboard drones. Origami of death. It is easy to conceal. It is downing Russian jets. An Australian company called Spypak manufactures them. They’ve been exporting them to Ukraine since March 2023. They are sold in pizza box size containers. They are assembled with rubber bands. It isn’t regular cardboard, it is a wax coated foam board. Radar can’t detect it. Parts are easy to replace. It can be used up to 60 times.
