History in the Park
Strolling through Lochend Park in Edinburgh, my curiosity was sparked by the upturned flower pot structure you see in the picture. I stopped to read the sign to see what it was. It turns out that it is a "doocot" dating back to the 16th Century.
A doocot was a structure built to house pigeons and was used by the inhabitants of nearby Lochend Castle as a source of meat, eggs and manure for their gradens.
In this case, there is also evidence of a chimney where they believe clothes were burnt after the plague of 1645.
History in the park.
