Hallgrimmskirkja, Reykjavik
“Yesterday is but today's memory, and tomorrow is today's dream.”
Khalil Gibran
Farewell to Reykjavik and Iceland for our return flight to the UK. Lots of memories and even more photos in the bag. The Hallgrimmskirkja, just opposite our Guesthouse on the edge of the city centre, was designed by Guðjón Samuelsson and inspired by Iceland's landscape - particularly its basalt columns and cascading waterfalls.
I’ll let the images speak for themselves, but for me the landscape ‘speaks’ to and moulds us, it makes us who we are. ‘Spirit of Place’ is real to me and the creative spirit and inspirational energy of Iceland is just incredible. Watching the cascading silver shower of the Northern Lights at Arnarstapi was unforgettable, maybe more so because it was freezing cold and pitch black out on the peninsula. This has been the most incredible adventure in creative imagery I’ve ever had, time will tell. I feel it’s given me a glimpse of what moves artists and composers to connect with the landscape and produce something of how they felt in response to their environment – a novel experience for someone who was a ‘money man’ in the building industry.
