Chrysotoxom cautum

A beautiful and quite large hoverfly. It loves hedgerows and tends to live on the edge of woodland. It's larvae eat aphids, which is a bonus. And it sat still long enough for me to photograph, until monster dog came bounding up and said "what you doin' mum?", at which point it decided enough was enough.....
