Going wild
Our front garden has quite poor soil and the small area of "lawn" has never really done well, unlike the larger plants in the surrounding beds.
So we've decided to have a go at creating more of a wildflower area there. I found a good online source for some wildflower plug plants, and they arrived yesterday. We spent the first part of the morning planting them out: Richard painstakingly made about 60 small holes, and I followed up with the plants.
They all look very healthy at the moment, so fingers crossed. The aim, this year, is a "low-flowering" area, with a mix of pollinator-friendly perennials. We'll still mow it later in the year, but at much longer intervals. Crucially, the plant mix includes Yellow Rattle, which should - if everything goes to plan - help to weaken the grass and create a better environment for wild flowers. Then we can add more variety as time goes on.
An enjoyable experiment...
