Monument to Meat

Monument to the old Edinburgh meat market at Semple Street next to the Union Canal. There were slaughter houses opposite on the site of Fountainbridge (now an office development) and cattle markets near by at Lauriston Place. The meat market moved to New Markets at Chesser (Edinburgh) in 1921. Despite its ‘B’ listing the meat market building was demolished in 2007 and the archway is all that remains. It is a beautiful archway yet it seems some how eery and out of place amist all the modern office blocks which tower along the street. A momento to a past life of the street.
