The Cup and Saucer
One of three Martello Towers in the island; built to protect the island from invasion by Napoleon.
And if you’ve ever wondered why we say IN Guernsey rather than ON Guernsey it is something to do with the local language Guernesiais… it is an easy way for us to quickly pick out those who are local and those who are incomers. My family arrived in Sark from Jersey in 1563 so I put myself firmly in the local camp.
Oh I forgot to say that Napoleon never invaded Guernsey; we had to wait for the Germans to do that…
My saying of the day is ‘Can of Worms…’
The idiom “opening a can of worms” was said to have originated in the US in the 1950's or earlier, even as early as the 20's. At the time, live bait for fishing used to be stored in metal cans with handles and lids. Once opened, there'd be a mess of wriggling worms inside.
