A Victorian Treasure...

The John Rylands Library on Deansgate in Manchester is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. A magnificent example of Victorian Gothic architecture, the interior has a feel of a castle or cathedral. Founded by Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her husband, John Rylands, the library opened to the public in 1900. The collections held within are of major significance. John Rylands was an entrepreneur, philanthropist, owner of the largest textile manufacturing concern in the UK and Manchester's first multi-millionaire. In July 1972 the library merged with the library of the University of Manchester and was named the John Rylands University Library of Manchester.
