William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister.
This is the memorial to the Victorian Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone - a four time UK prime minister - 1868-1874, 1880-1885, Feb-July 1886, and finally 1892-1894.
Its located in village where he made his home, and his family still live - Hawarden, In Flintshire, North Wales (my home village, I lived on Gladstone Way!). In the background is Gladstones Library, (formerly St Deniols Library) - a residential library set up by Gladstone in 1889 - he ferried a large part of his own library from his residence to this site in a wheelbarrow! Eventually it comprised over 32,000 books! A very interesting read all about that if you want to look for it, and you can arrange tours and visits.
