An early Curlew
Out a bit earlier than usual today and despite being only half awake ( I forgot to take binoculars ) I was rewarded when returning to my local patch after many weeks absence.
One of the reasons for staying away from Hurst Reservoir at Glossop was the horrible state the area was in - stuck in limbo with no decision made on its future. Metal fencing and vast plastic covers over the reservoir edge to deter nesting birds did not make it somewhere very attractive for humans to visit either.
The National Park Planning information still says decision pending but it's been that way a long time and no announcement has been made from a May meeting.
Today the fencing and plastic have gone and the birds are back. Canada Geese and Mallard, yes but also Curlew, lapwing and other waders. Ring Ouzels calling on one side of the Reservoir ( feeding on Rowen trees), Dipper in the by pass channel, Kestrels on the Snake Pass side. Small birds were hiding but there were Wren, Meadow Pipit, Willow Warbler and Stonechat around.
I really do feel my day has got off to a good start.
Plus I have beaten the rain which apparently is heading our way soon
