Coity Castle

This is just a brief history of Coity Castle. The Castle is a Norman Castle built by Sir Payn "the Demon" de Turbeville ( 1126 ) , one of the legendary Twelve Knights of Glamorgan supposed to have conquered Glamorgan under the leadership of Robert FitzHamon (de.1107 ), Lord of Gloucester. It now stands in ruins in Coity Higher.
A rectangular stone keep and the main curtain wall were added by the Normans in the 12th century, under the de Turberville family . The three -storey keep was primarly a defensive structure .
Extensive reworking took place in the 14th century. An adjoining chapel wing with a tall east window was added during the 15th century. During the 16th century the castle was owned by the Gamage family, then underwent a complete remodelling of the living quarters. The castle reverted back eventually to the de -Turbervilles in 1414.
There is lots more history available on-line. I will be blipping more photos of the ruins at a later a date.
