Anyone for a Crunchie?
Back to my favourite riverside pub today for a pre-lunch drink. What else is there to do on a sleepy sunny Summer Sunday?!
Behind the locks you can see the chimney and buildings of the former Cadbury Somerdale factory. The factory was built in 1923 when J S Fry & Sons (as in Fry's Chocolate Cream and Fry's Turkish Delight etc) moved their chocolate production out of Bristol to Somerdale. The company was later renamed Cadbury and was the production base for many different lines, including Crunchies. According to Cadbury Employees, the Crunchie Machine made enough bars to stretch to The Moon and back every week!
Sadly, the Cadbury factory ceased production two years ago, after being taken over by Kraft. But thankfully it looks as though the iconic red brick factory will stay and there are plans to turn it into apartments.
The closure of the factory has had a big effect on the town, not least because we can't visit the factory shop to stock up on wonky chocolate bars any more!!
