Hermann the German
Where in the world is Hermann the German? Not in Germany, but in New Ulm, MN.
Hermann is 32 feet tall (you can see people standing by his feet), the total height of the monument is 102 feet. The monument sits on a hill, and if you climb to the top you are rewarded with a fantastic view of the Minnesota River Valley.
Hermann is the nickname given to Arminius, who in 9 AD lead a battle to defend Germania from Roman conquest.
The monument was dedicated in 1897. I like this quote from then Minnesota Governor David Maston Clough:
"We must tell our children and our children's children the story of the heroes of every land and every time who have given their lives, that liberty and fraternity and equality might survive among men."
We were in New Ulm today for a fundraiser for The Grand, which is an old hotel undergoing a major renovation to provide a space for local artists, actors, and musicians.
