Camperdown Cemetery
Camperdown Cemetery was opened in 1848 and for 20 years was the main cemetery in Sydney. Originally it was nearly 13 acres (5.26 ha) but it is now a walled area of 4 acres (1.6 ha). The headstones were moved into the walled section but not the graves; they still remain in their original location which is now a park.
Apparently during its 20 year operation folk were buried in rather shallow graves resulting in an unpleasant smell in the area.
Your first impression of the cemetery may be that it is somewhat overgrown but the flora contains four species of remnant plants. One of these being Kangaroo Grass (Themeda triandra) which can be seen in the photo.
The cemetery is a special place amongst the busyness of Newtown.
