The Greater Roadrunner
This Roadrunner is classified as Geococcyx californianus, meaning Californian Earth-cuckoo. It is a long-legged bird in the cuckoo family, and yes there is a Lesser Roadrunner, but is only found in Mexico, but not this far north into Arizona. In my yard it is looking over his shoulder with its back towards me. His mate was just a few feet away, watching him pose and preen for the camera. A very aggressive bird, I've never seen them feed on seeds and plants. Mostly lizards, snakes and small birds like quails and hummingbirds. They lay in wait, ambushing their next meal. A powerful and tenacious and almost flightless bird.
