Oigh Sgeir Lighthouse
Back across the Minch from Vatersay to Canna. We saw plenty of dolphins but no basking sharks which was a disappointment as the area is famous for sightings. Perhaps Gavin Maxwell fished them all out when he had his shark oil factory on Soay. On the way we anchored in the channel between the islands of Oigh Sgheir (Hyskeir) and Garbh Sgeir and rowed ashore. The islands are made of basalt columns. Plenty of wildlife and now ungrazed flowers although previously cattle from Canna were shipped across to take advantage of the rich grazing. The lighthouse is Stevenson designed. The keepers apparently grew vegetables in a walled garden and played golf on a miniature course to while away the time!
