Manchester's Oldest Pissotiére...
The Lass O’ Gowrie, next to the River Medlock, is an old Victorian pub in an area once known as Manchester's Little Ireland. It takes its name from ‘The Lass O’ Gowrie,’ a Scottish poem by Lady Carolina Nairne. The pub was built on the site of a ‘pissotiére’, though more common in France, this was a public urinal for men to relieve themselves into the river below. A plaque heralds this rather dubious distinction.
