A Record in the Making?
I read about this in today's Bellingham Herald. A local man, Brandon Nelson, is attempting to break the Guinness 24 hour canoe or kayak flat water distance record. He's the guy closest to my camera in the photo. The other paddlers are part of his support group.
Nelson made a previous try in May 2006, after two years of intensive preparation. Four months before the attempt, his mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and died on the scheduled date. Two weeks later than planned, he paddled 147 miles, beating the previous record of 137 miles, or so he thought. Then he discovered that just three days earlier someone had set a new record of 150 miles.
I hope he has better luck this time.
There's a lot more to this story. If you have the inclination you can read about it here.
